The first Unicorn restaurant started back in Vietnam thirty years back under the name Ka’lin, aka, Chinese Unicorn. Ka’lin was operated by Kim and Bo Truong for many years before they left for America. In October of 2001, their son, Kiet Truong opened up Unicorn Berkeley with the help of his family. The restaurant soon became successful and began sweeping up great reviews all over the bay area. As a result, Kiet decided to expand to San Francisco and opened its door in September 2007.
The ambience is contemporary elegance using natural and fossilized stone and reclaimed tropical wood that show nature’s different textures. These textural surfaces are usually handcrafted or natural to begin with. Hence we intend to use eco-friendly materials that span less than a hundred years in age to over two hundred million years geologically. The design is kept minimalist with Asian Inspired approach. Indeed the ambience promises to be a humbling visual feast.
The core food concept is classic Asian cooking. Its genesis stretches from the Mekong delta in South Vietnam to the coastal reaches of Southern China. The ‘fusion’ begins when our chef brings these varieties of flavors and spices together in harmony for the discerning Californian palette. As part of this Pan-Asian California food concept, we include organically and locally grown produce when creating our own repertoire of eclectic dishes. To enhance the dining experience, we invite our sommelier, who has over thirty years of wine making and tasting experience to pair our food with their wine selection.
